Automated Border Control (ABC) gates. New automatic gates increasing the capacity of passenger inspection systems have been installed at several airports in Europe. Using face recognition techniques based on computer technology, they can verify the identity a passenger and check whether the traveler is the one described in the passport. The system compares the face of the passenger with the photo encoded in the biometric passport. If the system finds at least 45 similar elements, and if the passenger's name does not appear in the list of people who are not allowed to fly, the doors are opened. The system also performs the standard control of data, normally conducted by the border guards. The current photo of the traveler taken during the procedure is also compared with all databases with information on wanted persons. The whole process can take only about 15 seconds. Typical control performed by a border guard is neither as fast nor accurate.

ABC gates have already been installed at many airports in Europe for several years now. So far, they can be used only by citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation with biometric passports (with biometric data such as fingerprints and digital facial image). Statistical surveys show that the popularity of air travel is continually growing. In 2011, there were more than 700 million border crossings, and estimates predict that by 2030 there will be about 80% more.
SAT/DVB-T/FM antenna system in a single-family home. This universal solution provides independent DVB-S/S2, DVB-T and FM signals to 4 outlets. The terrestrial DVB-T signals are received by the professional VHF (174-230 MHz) and UHF (470-790 MHz) DVB-T antenna set A2810. Thanks to a special construction, the VHF and UHF antenna segments can be set to the vertical (V) or horizontal (H) polarization of the received signals. This enables the user to adjust the antenna to the local parameters of the broadcast signals, e.g. different polarization in the VHF and UHF bands.

LTE - improvement of data rates with the use of external antennas. LTE Advanced is a further extension of the LTE standard. Owners of devices compatible with LTE-A can theoretically reach transfers up to 300 Mbps, which is possible by aggregation of several frequency bands.
Sometimes there are problems with the LTE-A service associated with the communication of the modem with an improper base station. Simply, the modem communicates with the "strongest" base station that does not operate in LTE-A standard. To solve this problem, the user should learn (from the operator) where there is the nearest base station working in the LTE-A technology with band aggregation (preferably located in the opposite direction to the nearest/strongest base station that does not support LTE-A).
In the case study the user had been equipped with LTE-A modem but the highest download speed was at the level of 10 Mbps and upload speed reached only 1Mbps. The reason was that the modem communicated with base station not supporting LTE-A standard. The situation is presented in the map below.

The modem of the user connected to the base station located in the west, which did not support LTE-A and the data rates were unsatisfactory. The speed increased dramatically after the application of an external antenna, which was directed to the base station in the south-east. The station of the same operator works in LTE-A standard with band aggregation.

Fiber-optic systems - taking out fibers from tubes. The example below presents the application of the L56020 fiber-optic joint box for this type of installation. The first stage consisted in laying the L76012 fiber optic cable so that to leave a surplus length of the cable located by the box
The 12 single-mode fibers of the L76012 universal fiber optic cable are contained in central gel-filled tube of 3 mm diameter. The tube is made of plastic, but is flexible enough for placing the cable in the L56020 joint box. The outer jacket can be stripped by L5922 stripper that can also be used for cutting and breaking the tube.
In order take out fibers located inside the tube, the installer should use the L5925 mid span access tool.
The tool allows easy access to optical fibers in a loose buffer tube by precise shaving of its side.
Such a window should always be shaved on straight fragment of the tube. This usually means the need for drawing out a longer portion of the cable, which should then be retracted. There are two methods of taking out the fibers.
In the first one, the installer operates on a short portion of the tube, around half a meter. After cutting out two ca. 5 cm windows on both ends of the portion with the use of the MSAT 5 L5925 tool, the installer should find and cut the required two fibers in one window and take them out through the second. Each of the two fibers has the length of about half a meter. With this method it is not possible to pull out longer portions of the fibers because of friction caused by the gel in the tube. In the case where one needs longer fiber segments for convenient splicing, it is possible to cut out additional windows in order to gradually pull fibers through the tube over the short distances between the windows.
The second method consists in removing the tube over the whole length needed for convenient operation, cutting the two fibers and protecting the rest of them. To get rid of the tube, it is necessary to cut window along the whole length and then cut off the remaining part. This way, the access to the fibers can be ensured over distances of many meters, but it is not recommended to exceed the length of 2 meters - the longer the intended window, the higher risk of damaging the cable (fibers) during the operation.

Intelligent searching and playing back recordings in HD-TVI DVRs. Hikvision DVRs allow users to search for recordings in many ways. In addition to the standard, continuous play, the user can play the recorded material by events (motion detection, alarm input activation, VCA), markers, and DVR logs. The most advanced option is provided by intelligent search for recordings (marked as "smart"), allowing for easy skipping of less important fragments. The intelligent playback system performs analysis of the recorded video in search for pieces that contain information on motion or VCA, and then marks them with green color on the playback progress bar.

The recordings can be further analyzed and filtered by detecting:
  • line crossing,
  • intrusion in a selected area,
  • motion in other areas.
These functions do not need to be active during recording of the material. They can be switched on before playing archive recordings in order to facilitate and accelerate their analysis. In addition, the user can adjust the speed of the video playback, separately for the fragments marked by the analytical tools and the rest of the recordings.
Hikvision Disk Calculator - calculation of the data retention time. The Hikvision Disk Calculator v.3.0.0.2 allows for estimation of the video data retention time for a given capacity of the HDD(s) installed in an NVR. Inversely, the user can calculate the required capacity of the HDD(s) for the planned data retention time.
The application is easy and intuitive to use. The "Channel Number" field must be filled up with the number of cameras connected to the NVR. The choice for the "Device Type" should be "IPC" (IP camera). The "Resolution" field is designed to select the actual image resolution, from 2-12 MP range). The "Frame Rate" parameter can be chosen within the 1/16 - 50 fps range. The "Encoding" field is used for selection of the compression used by the camera and NVR (H.264, H.264+ or H.265).
Depending on the selected parameters, the program will recommend the optimum bit rate. If the cameras work with various encoding settings, they must be added separately, with individual parameters. After adding cameras, the necessary parameters are the capacity of the planned disk(s) ("Disk Space") and the recording time per day (continuous recording periods). The calculator will compute the data retention time. Below there are calculations for the same cameras but different compression methods.

Typically, the H.264+ compression method developed by Hikvision can be two times more efficient than H.264, preserving the same image quality. It has been taken into account in the application - the recommended bit rate is half that of H.264 and the same disk capacity allows for doubling the data retention time. With 8 cameras in the system, 4 TB disk space, and 24/24 recording, the time periods will be 11 and 22 days, respectively.

A single-mode device (switch) is connected to the L1573 converter via single-mode patchcord. The optical signal converted into multimode form is transmitted over multimode link and then converted again to the single-mode form by another L1573 converter.
