WPA3 is coming soon! At CES 2018, the Wi-Fi Alliance presented the first concrete piece of information about a new authentication protocol for Wi-Fi networks, called WPA3. It's the highest time to replace the fourteen-year-old WPA2 protocol with a newer one. Simply, the WPA2 protocol is not perfect any more. The protection is exposed to numerous attacks, including KRACK (Key Reinstallation Attacks) revealed in October last year. They involve re-using the encryption key to decrypt the Wi-Fi connection.
The WPA3 protocol is to be made available before the end of 2018 and will introduce four new functions:
  • Protection against brute-force attacks
    • The authentication process will be blocked after several unsuccessful attempts to log into the WiFi network.
  • New configuration options
    • Devices connected to the WiFi network can be used to configure other devices in the network. For example, the user of a phone or tablet will be able to change settings of other devices that do not have UI, such as "intelligent" light bulbs.
  • Encrypted connections
    • All connections between WiFi devices and the access point will be encrypted.
  • Improved cryptographic standard.
    • The new crypto standard has been described as a 192-bit security suite combined with CNSA (Commercial National Security Algorithm).
Hikvision - recording snapshots in the cloud. Hikvision CCTV devices can send still images from cameras to file hosting services. This option is useful, for example, for getting quick access to images from specific events or just for having redundancy screenshots. Hikvision provides support for popular cloud storage services:
  • OneDrive
  • GoogleDrive
  • DropBox

The data is sent in the form of three images captured from the auxiliary stream after the detection of an event caused by:
  • motion detection,
  • tampering detection,
  • video loss,
  • video content analysis (VCA).
The upload can be independently set in each channel for any of these events. There is also the option of using this functionality for each active event in the schedule mode.
EU directives and standards for coaxial cables. Until the middle of last year, RF cables used in TV, CATV, (S)MATV systems were treated exclusively as electrical products subject to product safety regulations under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and were subject to CE marking by the manufacturer. From from July 1st 2017 all installation cables should be treated as construction products subject to appropriate regulations. EN 50575:2014 harmonized standard specifies the requirements for the fire performance of cables which are used in permanent systems in buildings, i.e. power cables, control and communication cables, fiber optic cables. The new regulations require the manufacturer to issue for each cable Declaration of Performance (DoP), as well as to label the product meeting the relevant standards with the CE mark. It imposes on the manufacturer (it also applies to importers and distributors) the obligation to commission relevant tests to a notified certification body/laboratory in order to obtain certificate confirming the fire resistance class of the product in order to issue Declaration of Performance (DoP) with the relevant Euroclass, in accordance with EN 13501-6.
Coaxial Cable (75 ohm, class A): TRISET-113 1.13/4.8/6.8 [1m]

Changing video stream in iVMS-4200 application. Depending on a model, Hikvision IP cameras generate two or three video streams. The parameters of each stream can be individually configured (e.g. resolution, bit rate, frame rate, type and depth of compression). The main stream is used for recording, so its quality should be as high as possible. The auxiliary stream(s) can be used for remote connection(s), e.g. the second stream for mobile applications, and the third for iVMS-4200 client software. This provides the user with flexibility in setting image parameters depending on requirements and the bandwidth available. The iVMS-4200 app automatically changes the stream type by default. In the case of screen divisions up to 4, it displays the main streams from each camera. It may be problematic when the network capacity or computer performance is insufficient. Then the user can disable automatic change of streams and set the kind of stream manually for each camera or for a group of cameras. Here are the steps to change the default mechanism and set the auxiliary stream in the iVMS-4200 utility:
  • enter Tool -> System Configuration (1),
  • select the Image item (2),
  • uncheck the Auto-change Stream Type (3),
  • right click on the group of devices (NVR) and select the stream type (Set Sub-stream to All) (4).

Types of fiber splicers - which to choose? Before purchasing a fusion splicer/welder, the customer should necessarily determine the tasks to be performed. This refers, among others, to the average number of splicing operations on a monthly or annual basis, the number of splices done during one installation, and finally the kind of the networks (building, metropolitan, internal LANs, CCTV systems etc.).
Depending on the answers to the above questions, the customer can choose a more or less advanced model of a fusion splicer. One of the most important processes carried out by the splicer is the positioning of the fibers before the welding process. According to this criterion, splicers can be divided into three groups:
  • Splicers based on cladding alignment - this is the most economical option; the splicer adjusts the mutual positions of their cladding (the standard diameter is 125 μm) to minimize the difference. Theoretically, such a method of positioning results in a weld having a slightly larger attenuation compared to other solutions, especially in the case of fibers of poor quality, where the core is not placed centrally with respect to the cladding. In practice, however, the fibers sold today are of high quality and in most cases the parameters of the splices performed with this method do not differ from results achieved with the use of other methods.
  • Splicers with aligning geometric core positions - this method is used by the majority of splicers and many manufacturers and retailers wrongly describe them as devices with aligning (actual) core positions; the core geometry is obtained by optical means (visible light). The intensity of light in the fiber decreases as a function of depth, and with a given sensitivity and simple image analysis, it is possible to determine the approximate positions of fiber cores. This method has been optimized for good quality fibers, where the geometric position of the core is equivalent to its real position. When the core is embedded eccentrically, the parameters of the splice can be worse than in the case of fiber cladding alignment.
  • Splicers with alignment of (real) core positions - it is the most professional and at the same time the most expensive solution. The devices using this method can automatically recognize the type of welded fibers and arrange them according to their real cores. Such welds are characterized by the best performance parameters. The welding machines utilizing this method are several times more expensive than devices based on the previous solutions.
Fusion Splicer: Signal Fire AI-8 (with toolbox and tools)
Signal Fire AI-8 L5870 fusion splicer offers two methods of fiber alignment, cladding alignment and aligning geometric core positions. It can be successfully used in all types of fiber optic installations. Due to current technological advances and the limited number of global fiber manufacturers, the difference between the results provided by splicers with geometric and real core alignment can be neglected. Situations in which the fibers have a significant deviation of core positions are extremely rare, and if they occur, it usually does not have a significant impact on the quality of the connections made.
