Hikvision highlights 10 trends in the security industry for 2021. Despite the crisis for many industries in 2020, the continuous transformation of solutions in the security world has not stopped, and, in areas such as multi-technology perception, convergence of security systems, artificial intelligence or cloud solutions, it has even accelerated. It can be said that the range of the security industry is also changing, from keeping people and resources safe to creating safer and more efficient environments. Below, we give an account of the thoughts and ideas of the leading security systems manufacturer, Hikvision, on the key trends that may affect the security industry in the short and long term.
Smart video technology to help during the pandemic crisis. Facing the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are making it a priority to find ways to safely get back into business. Smart video technology has shown great potential and has proven to be extremely helpful in keeping employees and customers safe when returning to work. AI-based security cameras monitor densely populated locations to ensure that employees follow epidemic safety policies, including social distancing, wearing masks, and flow control, and provide initial temperature measurements. Contactless verification systems, i.e. face recognition, handprint recognition, NFC and QR codes, have been introduced in many companies and institutions. Thanks to them, the employees can avoid direct physical contact with generally available equipment.
Multi-dimensional perception. Image capturing has for long been the primary and the only perception possibility of video security systems. However, with the development and applications of detection technology, more efficient edge computing, and intelligent algorithms, integrated security devices and systems that use multiple sensors are becoming increasingly popular. Nowadays, more perception options, such as radar detection, multispectral imaging, humidity and temperature measurement, and gas pressure detection, are being integrated into video cameras and systems. Such integration expands the perception and application of the cameras and video systems, enabling the collection and use of multi-dimensional information. For example, cameras with radar technology that use centimeter and millimeter waves are a promising approach and they can extend perception beyond the range of vision to include object detection and motion tracking up to 100m. Multispectral imaging is another good approach for cameras to perceive information from the invisible light spectrum. For example, the innovative ultraviolet (UV) detection enhances the perception of cameras, even to capture the phenomenon of an invisible electric arc. That technology is most widely applied in safety control of aging power grids.
Visibility - anytime, in any conditions. Today, the low-light imaging technology that delivers color images in dark environments and at night is becoming a solution of choice in the security industry. More and more front-end cameras are now equipped with low-light imaging technology for 24/7 observing and capturing color images. However, in extreme conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, fog or smog, thermal imaging is preferred, where cameras generate an image based on heat radiation from people and objects. Thanks to thermal imaging, recordings are more accurate, even in total darkness.
5G technology for UHD and wireless video security. 5G technology might bring ground-breaking changes to the security industry. Greater 5G bandwidth and lower latency allow for regular transmission of high-quality images, and, with the widespread use of ultra-high-definition (UHD) cameras, they can bring new possibilities in the video security domain. Moreover, reliable 5G wireless transmission will revolutionize the current market of wired video security. In the emerging 5G networks, wireless cameras will proliferate and more edge devices will be connected in remote locations. It will also facilitate broad and rapid deployment of AI applications to edge devices.
Interoperability of security systems. The benefits of combining multiple security systems including video, access control, alarms, fire prevention and crisis management into a unified platform are manifold, and the efficiency and cost effectiveness are obvious. For example, when an alarm goes off, the integrated system automatically connects it to the nearest camera, so that the whole situation can be easily monitored from the monitoring center. This means a significant reduction in time and effort, and above all costs. Savings on workforce cost, installer time, separate maintenance costs, software license payments, etc. make up an attractive package for customers. Moreover, convergence makes security solutions scalable. The existing infrastructure will meet and manage future needs on the same central platform.
The digital transformation of enterprises supported by a video surveillance system. Today's smart video surveillance solutions powered by AI (artificial intelligence) analytics are designed to improve automation and operational efficiency in various sectors, including traffic, retail, manufacturing, construction, education and more. An example might be retailers to have a better understanding of the traffic of their stores and optimize their trading strategies with smart video solutions. Thanks to the observation of changes, the system users can make more informed decisions affecting their business. Thanks to smarter algorithms in cameras, they have more applications possible. Automatic license plate recognition (ANPR), automatic event notification, people counting, thermal mapping, detecting bad parking or the absence of a helmet on the employee's head, as well as a number of other AI applications are becoming popular in the security market. With the increased edge processing and optimized AI algorithms, security cameras will take on smarter tasks in the near future to help improve local community security and data systems performance.
Open AI application ecosystems. As AI applications pave their way into many new fields, the market requirements for AI algorithms are becoming more diverse and there is a growing demand for customization. We have noticed that more and more people in the industry cooperate with each other, thanks to which new ‘ecosystems’ are created that can meet various market needs. Many security vendors allow their devices to use third-party smart applications. This adds to the variety of smart functions and offers benefits to the cooperating companies. Providing customers with open AI-powered platforms, where they can create and teach their own algorithms, is a fairly common practice in other industries, and is now emerging in the security field as well. With the easy-to-use AI-based platforms, the users can very effectively develop their own algorithms using the collected data and to meet their specific business needs in the field of security.
Emphasis on cybersecurity and data privacy. Cybersecurity and data privacy have challenged the security industry since the first security device was connected to the Internet. Millions of devices and security systems are now joining cloud-based solutions and a host of innovative technologies such as IoT, big data, 5G and artificial intelligence. Protecting your security devices and systems from cyber attacks and ensuring data privacy is now more important than ever. Cybersecurity will continue to be an industry concern at every stage of data processing, from generation, transmission and storage to use and the disposal. The ‘Zero Trust; concept has been popular in the field of cybersecurity and it can be an inspiring idea for security companies to bring cybersecurity standards to a higher level by following the principle of ‘never trust, always verify’. Will it be like that? Time will tell.
How to safely remove optical fibers from the tube? Building systems based on optical fiber cabling requires the use of appropriate tools. There is no room for half-measures here, the use of other than recommended tools may result in the risk of damage to the fibers, which may effectively hinder the execution of an optical path.
Of the many actions involved in the installation of fiber-optic cables, some of the most difficult ones include cutting out windows in tubes. The windows are shaved in order to pull out the desired fibers from the tube without disturbing the rest, while maintaining the continuity of the tube. Operations of this type are often performed in fiber-optic splice closures located on poles carrying multi-fiber trunk cables, where, from a given pole, one or two fibers have to be dropped (as a subscriber link or a branch of the network).

Ripley MSAT-5 L5925 stripper guarantees safe cutting of windows in fiber optic tubes with a diameter of 1.9 to 3.0 mm. It can be successfully used for universal DRAKA cables with a maximum of 16 fibers (24-fiber cables have a larger tube diameter).
Measuring the DVB-S/S2 satellite signal with Wideband technology. To ensure proper reception of satellite TV, many people, who are afraid of setting up and installing a satellite dish on their own, use the services of an expert who is equipped with a professional meter. In fact, this is not a simple task for an inexperienced DIY enthusiast, and the proper adjustment of the antenna dish has a key impact on the quality of satellite signal reception. If the satellite signal is supplied to several receivers, multiswitches are used, to which cables from a quatro LNB should be connected. Such system requires 4 cables to be connected. What if 4 cables cannot be provided from the LNB to the multiswitch? The latest solution based on a Wideband LNB enables the reduction of four to two wires. The LNBs used in multiswitch systems operating in the WideBand technology, unlike the Quatro LNBs standard, have two signal outputs (H polarization/V polarization). A system based on one satellite requires only two satellite cables from the LNB to the multiswitch. The GT-WB1 model A98222 is based on a single local 10.41 GHz oscillator providing excellent performance in the entire frequency range of 290...2340 MHz. GT-WB1 A98222 works with TERRA SRM522 R80522 multiswitch. And how to precisely align the satellite dish in this case? An ideal solution is to use the Signal WS-6980 R10837 meter.
The photos above show the measurement of the satellite signal made with the Signal WS-6980 meter. The measurement was made using the Wideband technology for the 11508 V transponder (HOTBIRD 13E, DVB-S2, 8PSK, SR 27500, FEC 3/4). To do that, you need to change the LNB type from Universal (Legacy signal measurement, fullband output) to Wideband in the meter settings, and select one of the 10410 available frequencies (photo from the left). In this way, the signal at the level of PWR = 78 dBµV and the MER coefficient = 13.4 dB (photo from the right) was obtained. Such values ​​allow trouble-free reception of the satellite signal on a satellite receiver.
How temperature affects battery operation The nominal operating temperature of maintenance-free batteries varies and, depending on the model, is usually between 20 and 25°C. Working at other temperatures affects their performance.
As the temperature drops, the capacity of the cells decreases, so in winter there are, for example, problems with starting a car engine. However, if the battery is not deeply discharged, low or even freezing temperatures should not damage it. Working at elevated temperatures causes a significant reduction to their service life. This is halved for each sustained increase in temperature of 8°C above the rated value. This means that, for example, a battery with a rated temperature of 25°C operated at 33°C will retain 50%, and at 41°C only 25% of the projected lifetime.

To achieve the maximum service life of a buffer battery:

  • Install the battery away from devices being heat sources (e.g. transformer, heat sink),
  • Keep at least 1.5 cm space around the battery and use devices with ventilation openings in the housing to ensure free air circulation,
  • Use effective natural or forced ventilation or air conditioning,
  • Use a charging circuit with temperature compensation for the charging voltage if the operating temperature is supposed to exceed 25°C.

A new series of AcuSense recorders. A new series of Acusense recorders, offering by even greater functionality than the previous solution, are now available from DIPOL. The previous generation of recorders with the "/4S” designation, e.g. DS-7616NXI-I2/4S, enables perimeter protection with the option of human/vehicle filtering on 4 channels for any camera not equipped with the AcuSense technique.
