Floating photovoltaic panels – this is how farms are built in Asia.

Singapore-based Sunseap Group and central government agency BP Batam, responsible for land development on Indonesia's Batam Island, have signed a contract to build the world's largest floating photovoltaic (FPV) and energy storage system (ESS) on the Duriangkang reservoir in the south of the island. The project is estimated to be worth around US$2 billion.

The photovoltaic panel system is expected to have a capacity of 2.2 GW and cover an area of about 1,600 hectares, making it the largest system of its kind in the world. The energy storage facility is also expected to have a record capacity of 4,000 MWh.

Sunseap expects the PV farm to generate more than 2,600 GWh of electricity annually, potentially offsetting the burning of more than 1.8 million tons of coal. The company says the power generated and stored will be used by Batam, but if there is a large surplus of power generated, the plan is to be able to deliver it to Singapore, some 50 km away, using a cable located on the seabed.

Access rights can be modified individually for each account, so the administrator can decide for example which cameras can be viewed by a given user and whether he should have access to recordings. Why is calibration of fiber optic splicers important?

Calibrating a fiber optic splicer involves adjusting the power and temperature of the generated arc to the current environmental conditions. A properly adjusted arc allows for proper splices to be made, both in terms of attenuation and strength. Therefore, calibration should always be performed before the actual splicing – at the beginning of work or in the case of drastically changing conditions (e.g. a sudden drop in temperature resulting from splicing inside a building and further work outside).

The most expensive models of fusion splicers are equipped with pressure and temperature sensors that allow for an automatic calibration in real time. Most popular devices, however, require manual calibration, which will take several minutes. Skipping calibration will not always result in bad splices. However, there is a risk that some, even those indicating low attenuation, will be very weak and unstable mechanically (e.g. if the splicing temperature is too low, they may sometimes crack after an hour).

The Signal Fire AI-8C L5870 fiber optic splicer is based on popular calibration method – the fibers placed in the welding compartment are subjected to successive electric arcs. The fibers are fused and the splicing software measures and analyzes the distance over which the fiber ends retract. Based on the measurement, the appropriate arc parameters are determined.

The calibration of Signal Fire is done by selecting "Arc Calibration" option in the management application. When the fibers are inserted into the splicing chamber and the cover is closed, the calibration process starts automatically. When finished, the splicer switches to normal mode, i.e. is prepared for regular splicing operations.

In the winter period, installers should pay particular attention to the proper preparation of the splicing equipment before commencing work. A splicer that has spent the night in a car parked outside and has just been brought into a room with room temperature is not ready for immediate use: the fogged camera lens may result in erroneous fiber positioning and auto-focus problems. To avoid such issues, installers should make sure splicers are stored in appropriate temperature conditions.

How to receive DVB-T2/HEVC signal in a SMATV system with DVB-T/MPEG-4 receivers? By 2022, a new standard of terrestrial television broadcasting, called DVB-T2/HEVC, will be introduced throughout the European Union.
